The three stages from conception to birth are the germinal stage, where fertilisation and implantation happen in the first two weeks; the embryonic stage from week 3 to week 8, where major systems and organs form; and the fetal stage, where the baby grows, organs mature and physical features are formed.
A typical full-term pregnancy runs 39 to 40 weeks—roughly 10 months total. Ovulation occurs around two weeks after the first day of your period and is when the baby is conceived. From the moment of conception, you will have approximately 38 weeks until delivery in a full-term pregnancy, which is about 9 months from conception.
Conception to birth, which is the entire duration of pregnancy, is called gestation. This is the time from when the egg and the sperm fertilise, the fetus grows and develops in the womb, and the baby is delivered. The gestational age is measured in weeks from the first day of the last period to the current date.
Pregnancy lasts 40 weeks, calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period—which works out to about 10 months. These 40 weeks of full-term pregnancy can be divided into three trimesters: the first trimester, 1 to 12 weeks; the second trimester, 13 to 27 weeks; and the third trimester, 28 to 40 weeks or to birth.
