The intensity of labour pain depends on a combination of physical and psychological factors. The intensity of uterine contractions, cervical dilation, position of the fetus, speed of labour, previous pregnancies, fear and anxiety about labour and support system can impact labour pain.
The evident signs of labour pain are consistent and intense contractions that become painful, water gush or fluid drain through the vagina due to rupture of amniotic fluid, and discharge of mucus plug that may be pink, brown or red in colour.
During the first stage of labour, you may experience visceral pain that originates from regular uterine contractions, leading to cramps in the abdomen, back and groin area. Stretching and dilation of the cervix are also responsible for labour pain.
You may experience labour pain in specific points, including the lower abdomen and back, groin and thighs, during the initial stage of labour. During the final stage of labour, you may experience sharp and intense pain in areas including the vagina, perineum and rectum.
