Gynecology is a branch of science that focuses on the health of the female reproductive system. Gynecological problems refer to issues and medical conditions that affect the reproductive system. These issues can vary in severity and nature and include conditions related to the ovaries, uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina, cervix, pelvis, bladder, and breasts. A gynecologist is a specialist who performs routine checkups and also takes care of diseases that affect the reproductive system. They also help you through pregnancy, delivery, menopause, and more.

Take good care of your body by following proper hygiene. Avoid washing your genital area with strong soaps, as they have a self-sufficient cleaning system. Douching is also not recommended, as it removes the good bacteria that are essential for proper pH balance from the vagina. Wear undergarments that is breathable and light and also ensure that it is not too tight or moist, as it allows the bad bacteria to grow.  

Another major element in taking good care of your genital area is practicing safe intercourse. There are many sexually transmitted diseases and they can affect your health. Ensure that there is an open conversation with your partner and the doctor about the best way to care for your health in a sexual relationship.  

Exercise and Diet

A balanced and healthy diet containing fresh vegetables, fruits, whole foods, and other nutritious foods can keep you healthy and prevent problems. Consume food that is rich in fibre, as it can prevent menstrual cramping and also reduce the pressure on your pelvic floor as the digestive tract is regular. There are also foods, like

Regular exercise can also greatly impact your reproductive system and overall health. Maintain a healthy weight, as that helps with heavy or missed periods. Gentle exercise like yoga can also reduce any pain in the pelvis. Along with diet and exercise, getting enough rest and quality sleep is one of the ways to prevent gynecological problems.  

Examine Your Breasts

There are some areas of the reproductive system, like the cervix and the uterus, that need examination by gynecologists. But you should self-examine your breasts regularly for bumps or abnormal lumps in the body. Palpate your breasts, underarms, and nipples and feel for any lumps at least once a month. If you find something abnormal or new, make an appointment with the doctor and get it checked out.  

When should I see a Doctor?

While it is important to practice self-care it is also important to consult a doctor if you have symptoms that are cause for concern. This includes symptoms related to your periods, reproductive system, or overall well-being. Symptoms to consult a gynecologist are:

  • Abnormal bleeding during periods

How Often Should I Consult A Gynecologist

From the age of 13 to 15 years, you should annually meet your gynecologist. This should become a lifetime practice, as it prevents gynecological problems or helps in the early detection and treatment of issues. Here are a few things that the appointment would entail:

Routine Checkups

In a yearly regular checkup, the doctor will do a pelvic exam by checking your vagina, vulva, ovaries, and cervix. A breast examination is also done along with a painless Pap test to check for cancer or other infections. It is done as an early detection test to catch issues before they become a big problem. If there are any signs, then additional tests may be ordered. However, many of these conditions, only at a later stage so it is important to get annual checks even if you are fit to catch conditions early.  


If you have symptoms, then there can be a few screenings that are recommended for:

  • Fibroids: These are benign tumours that are formed on the uterine walls and usually do not need treatment. But sometimes they cause pain in the upper legs, cramping. If you have them because of these uterine fibroids, then the doctor may prescribe medication or remove them surgically.
  • Urinary Incontinence: It is a condition of the pelvic floor and is caused by weak muscles around the bladder. That means when there is pressure on the bladder, there is less control. This condition can be treated with medical or physical therapy.  
  • Ovarian cysts: Cysts are sacs filled with fluids that appear in ovaries. These are harmless but can cause symptoms when they grow large which includes bloating or breast tenderness, swelling, etc. Medications or simple surgery may be recommended.  
  • Endometrium biopsy: The uterine lining or endometrium may have abnormal tissue cells and this is tested using a simple biopsy by taking a sample of the endometrium for testing.
