Welcome to Week 14

Congratulations! Week 14 marks the beginning of your second trimester. Now that you are past the first trimester, which carries the highest risk of miscarriage, you can breathe a sigh of relief and relax a little. Here’s what you can expect this week.

Update on Your Body

This trimester, you may experience the ‘mid-pregnancy bloom’, a welcome phase where you start to feel better about yourself and lose the mood swings that had been hounding you just a few months ago. You will start gaining weight more rapidly now and start showing too. If this is not your first pregnancy, your baby bump may appear sooner than last time, as your body adjusts to your growing uterus faster.

Update on Your Baby

Your baby’s arms have started getting longer and they will soon be proportionate with the rest of his or her body. Your baby can grimace, squint and even frown now, and may respond to external stimuli, such as moving away when the doctor touches your belly. His or her brain is developing quickly.

Tips for an Expectant Mom

Dos

Be regular with your supplements, because you need those extra doses of nutrients to sustain your baby and yourself. Remember to take your calcium and folic acid or iron supplements at different times, with a minimum 2-hour gap between them. Calcium interferes with the absorption of iron in your body; hence, taking them together can minimise their effect.

It is fine to experience an increased or decreased libido during pregnancy, and it is completely safe to engage in intercourse unless your doctor has specifically cautioned you against it (possibly for a low-lying placenta, vaginal bleeding, a dilated cervix or STDs).Continue all the healthy practices from your first trimester, especially those related to diet, hygiene and exercise.

Tips for an Expectant Dad

Dos

Respect your partner’s wishes, and support her through her mood swings. A decreased libido doesn’t mean she is rejecting you; it just means she may have too much on her plate right now.

It is safe for your partner to travel during this trimester, so it’s a great time for a short getaway. However, speak to her doctor about safety measures and precautions before you plan anything.
