How to Calculate The Pregnancy Duration

A foetus spends about 38 weeks in the mother’s womb, but the gestation period, or length of the pregnancy, is calculated as 40 weeks. That is because it is calculated from the mother's last period and not the conception date, which typically happens a few weeks later. There are 3 main stages in pregnancy in the maternity cycle. These are called trimesters and are for about 3 months each:

  • Conception to 12 weeks ( 1 to 3 months) is called the first trimester
  • 13 weeks to 27 weeks (4 to 6 months) is called the second trimester
  • 28 to 40 weeks (7 to 9 months) is the third or final trimester

The length of the pregnancy depends on the woman, and the babies are said to be carried full term if they are born between 37 and 42 weeks. Choose a top maternity hospital in Hyderabad that helps you carry the baby to its full term.

Stages of Maternity Cycle

Conception: It is when the egg gets fertilized by the male sperm.

Month 1: These are the early stages of pregnancy and when conception happens. Sperm and egg fertilise to form a zygote, eventually an embryo . This then passes into the uterus through the fallopian tube. First 8 weeks after fertilization, your baby is called is an embro. Later it is called fetus until delivery. On the day of the missed period, your pregnancy test is positive.

Month 2: The embryo is now the size of a kidney bean. The face shapes begin to form with the ears, nose, and eyelids. The legs and the arms also start to develop, with toes and fingers becoming more prominent. The neural tube, sensory organs, and digestive tract form at this stage. Tiny heart starts beating by around 6 weeks, all organs begin to form. The gender of the fetus is assigned around 9th week, though we cannot detect by USG.

Month 3: The foetus grows longer to about 2 inches and is the weight of a small banana. The foetus also starts to make small movements that you cannot feel but can be heard.

Between 6 and 8 weeks, Fetus Opens and closes its fists and mouth bones hardening facial features, starts to become prominent. you will get your first ultrasound test as part of the maternity packages in Hyderabad. This will help you determine if the pregnancy is viable or if you are carrying twins. All organs are completely formed by 12 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions of brain and spinal cord, which continue to form and develop.

Second trimester

During this time, the morning sickness may abate and the pregnancy become more visible.

Month 4: The foetus gains more weight and grows longer. They can now blink, and the blood vessels and the heart are fully developed. They also develop their fingertips at this stage.

Month 5: The foetus continues to grow longer and heavier and is about 280 gm. This is the stage when you move on to the next stage of pregnancy. The foetus at this point can make faces, yawn, stretch, and even suck its thumb, and you start to feel movements. An ultrasound is done to determine if all the organs are formed properly with no congenital

anamolies. Month 6: The baby is about 640 g and can respond to sound through movements. In this stage, the baby has a sense that it is in the mother’s womb.

Third Trimester

The baby grows very fast at this stage, and you may feel more tired. You can also notice many changes in your body and experience sleep difficulties, back pain, breathlessness, and more.

Month 7: The foetus changes its position often and weighs around 850 g. Even if the baby is born now, it can survive.

Month 8: The foetus doubles in weight, increases to about 1800 g, and moves about a lot. A layer of fat is formed around the baby, and many women notice a yellow liquid coming out of the breasts. It is a sign that the breast is ready for feeding.

Month 9: It is the final stage of the maternity cycle. The baby weighs about 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg and is about 18 inches long. The brain and the lungs are fully developed at this stage. The head of the baby gets into position for birth.
