Know more about Fever and chills during Pregnancy

Fever is often linked with pregnancy. Fever is a protective mechanism of the body against infection. During fever, a person’s body temperature rises to 100.4°F (38 °C) or higher. The temperature rises so that it kills the foreign body causing infection.

During pregnancy, the immune system is weakened so that the body doesn’t treat the growing baby as a foreign element. The body becomes prone to infection such as cold and flu in pregnancy.

Pregnant women may show other symptoms of infection along with fever. Common symptoms that occur along with fever due to infection are as follows-

  • Shivering
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling tired or sleepy
  • Dehydration
  • Sweating

Fever is an indication of infection along with the above symptoms. So women who experience fever or other symptoms of illness during pregnancy should contact a doctor as soon as possible.

Common reasons for fever during pregnancy

During pregnancy, you may experience fever and chill due to the following infection-

1) Urinary tract infection (UTI)

It is the infection occurring in the urinary tract system which comprises urethra, bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Infection occurs in the urinary tract when bacteria gets into this system and multiplies. Bladder infection is the most common UTI infection in pregnant women. About 10 % of pregnant women complain of UTI and are best treated by drinking plenty of water and few antibiotics prescribed by your gynecologist.

2) Upper Respiratory Infection (Common Cold)

It is the most common viral infection experienced by each one of us. The upper respiratory tract infection includes infection of the sinuses, nasal passages, pharynx, and larynx. You may have symptoms that mirror the flu, as well as a runny nose, sore throat, cough, and breathing difficulty. The symptoms usually last from 3 to 14 days and can be treated at home. If your symptoms persist for several days you should consult your doctor as it might be a more serious infection.

3) Gastrointestinal Infection

Infection in the gastrointestinal tract is a serious viral infection in pregnant women if left untreated. The gastrointestinal infection will show symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhoea which will make you feel dehydrated. Dehydration can cause contractions and even preterm labor. Other potential side effects include hypotension, dizziness, weakness, fainting, and, in severe cases, electrolyte imbalance. The treatment includes fluids such as water and Gatorade, as well as the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce and toast), will be helpful. It recommended consulting a doctor immediately if fever persists along with other symptoms.
