What speeds up your aging process?

December 3, 2020

Regardless of your want to remain “sweet 16” or “forever 21”, nature has its plan, and it is called aging. Like life and death, aging is a natural process that everyone has to go through. Some people are scared of it while others welcome it smilingly and gracefully.

Aging is unavoidable and irreversible, but you can do things to slow it down or avoid mistakes that are speeding it up.

Here are some mistakes you might be making unknowingly or knowingly that are the main culprits in making you age more quickly.

We all know the harmful effects of smoking on the heart, lungs and the risk of cancer, but did you know that smoking also makes your skin age faster? How does smoking speed up the aging process?  The heat from the cigarette can directly have a burning effect on the skin which changes the elastic fibers in it and makes it wrinkle earlier. Not just that, smoking decreases the vitamin A levels and hence reduces the moisture of the skin which results in the early development of wrinkles and lines.

Sugary Foods

Eating sugary food is said to speed up the aging process. The sugar you consume keeps circulating in the bloodstream where it attaches to a protein in your body and creates new molecules called AGES (advanced glycation end products). The process of “glycation” hampers the flexibility of the bodily tissues and damages them. This eventually creates wrinkles, sagging skin, and poor health.

A human body is made to withstand strong environmental stress, but if it crosses the threshold, then it can cause severe physical and mental exhaustion which includes aging.

Therefore, the management of stress is essential for the longevity of life.

A sudden outburst of anger can cause severe mental and physical exertion that can speed up the aging process.

Wrong Eating Habits

Certain food habits are terrible for your health and your aging process. Few of them are:

  • Consuming excess carbohydrates: Carbs are nothing but sugar in disguise, and as discussed earlier we all know the effect of sugar on aging.
  • Consuming food low in fat: Low-fat diet deprives you of all the nutritious fats that keep you healthy and youthful.
  • Adding excess salt in the diet:  Excess salt in the body can retain fluid in the body, making the cells to swell and eventually to shrink; this creates dehydration and also leads to wrinkled skin.

Excess alcohol consumption can speed up the aging process by causing premature wrinkles. This happens due to the loss of collagen, redness, elasticity, dehydration, and puffiness of the skin. Alcohol also leads to nutrient depletion, dehydration, and liver inflammation which are the main culprits in making you age more quickly.

Keeping the facts aside, remember that age is just a number and what makes you young is the feeling of youth inside you. Consider the above-mentioned details as a few tips to keep the spirit of feeling young inside you alive.
