Importance of Mental Health while you're Expecting

December 18, 2020

Apart from the various physical changes, women go through changes mentally too during their pregnancy. Pregnancy is a different experience for every woman, going through physical changes, your body suddenly becomes a home for your baby, and soon starts producing your babies food too. Going through all these physiological changes, one may not pay much heed to the unseen psychological changes.

Frequent change in emotions or mood swings may be one of the most common side effects of pregnancy. Throughout the 9 months, you may go through a lot of stress and anxiety in anticipation of the arrival of your mini-you. Ups and downs are apart and parcel of life, that being said, during pregnancy your ups and downs seem to be more highlighted, as it doesn’t just affect you, but your baby too.

Pregnancy is linked with physiological and psychological changes and functioning for women. It usually affects women(psychologically) in the following ways:

●       Mood swings

●       Fatigue/ weariness

●       Anxiety

●       Sleepiness or sleeplessness

●       React emotionally weaker (for things you don’t generally feel that way towards)

These may be caused due to hormonal imbalances during pregnancy, as women experience a drastic increase in the production of hormones. The passing of each stage increases the production of estrogen and progesterone (common hormones), impacting the stability of your emotions. The following are some ways to cope up with the emotional rollercoasters you’re going through:

●       Get enough sleep

●       Take naps during the day (if you’re feeling too overwhelmed or exhausted)

●       Maintain a healthy diet

●       Meditate (to help keep your mind calm)

●       Exercise regularly or practice yoga

●       Self-care

●       Seek professional help if required

Acknowledging these rough phases during pregnancy can be helpful, as it’s not easy to pretend everything is smooth sailing during these 40 weeks. Although, having a close relationship with your partner and communicating well, and making use of the support of your family members play an important role in overcoming these lows during pregnancy. It’s very healthy to open up about how you’re feeling and what emotions you’re going through with someone and seek appropriate consultation, if necessary. Stay healthy both physically and mentally, in order to stay happy and calm!
