The surest way to ascertain, if a woman is pregnant is by taking a pregnancy test. This test can be easily done at your home and a probable result can be instantly seen. These pregnancy test kits are easily available at any chemist store and the easiest procedure is followed. You just have to pour three drops of your urine and wait as per the instructions are written on the box of the kit and infer the result at that very moment using the key.

However, until the test is taken, the early signs and symptoms of pregnancy keep many women on their toes, as some of the signs are similar to premenstrual symptoms or PMS. This could be a reason that many women have been often quoted as saying that they did not even recognize the early symptoms of pregnancy. Not only every woman’s experience of signs and symptoms differ from another, but also one woman’s pregnancy may differ from the next.

Here are some of the early signs to look out for:

  • Missed menstruation cycle or period

The most apparent sign of pregnancy is a missed period or delay in menstruation cycle. This leads many women to take up a pregnancy test. However, not every missed or delayed period could be caused by pregnancy.

Apart from pregnancy, some noteworthy reasons for a missed or delay in menstruation cycle could be sudden and extra loss/gain of weight, fatigue, stress, and other hormonal issues. Many women who are known to have been taking birth control pills experience a missed or delayed cycle, once they stop taking the pills.

In this discussion, it is also critical to understand about spotting or bleeding during pregnancy. A pregnant woman should be aware whether if the bleeding is normal or a doctor needs to be consulted.

  • Tiredness

It is often noticed that pregnant women feel tired or fatigued and this is considered quite normal. But it can be considered a very important sign of early pregnancy, as tiredness may be unusual. Such fatigue is felt generally a week after conception. The reason could be high levels of a hormone called progesterone, which the body starts developing in that time period. There are some additional factors like low blood sugar level in the body, low blood pressure and increased production of blood. Pregnant women are advised to take proper rest and eat foods rich in protein and iron, among others to offset it.

  • Morning sickness or commonly called nausea

This is most widely known as a symptom of pregnancy, however, the startling fact is that morning sickness or nausea does not happen to every pregnant woman. Though the real reason behind this is yet to be known, a likely cause is pregnancy hormones. Most common in the morning hours, it is seen to be occurring at any time of the day. Nausea may continue until the entire pregnancy period for some women.

  • Food Cravings or dislike for certain foods

It is not unusual to feel more hungry during the initial days of pregnancy, and you may find yourself craving some very strange items, ranging from pickles and ice cream to hot dogs and chocolate syrup! These food cravings are actually caused by the hormonal changes that are going on in your body. Such likes or dislikes may extend till the entire nine months of pregnancy but has been observed that it reduces for several women in their 13/14 week of being pregnant.

This early sign of pregnancy is your body’s way of making sure that you get the proper nutrition needed to support your baby’s initial growth. Pregnant women must eat healthy food for proper nutrition. In extreme cases, a doctor should be consulted.

  • Implantation Bleeding: Spotting and Cramping

One of the earliest signs that women notice is spotting, which results due to the fertilized egg attaching to the uterus wall called implantation bleeding. Known to happen generally between six and twelve days after the fertilization of the egg, women mistake this bleeding as the start of her period. Many women complain of cramps similar to what a woman experiences during menstruation, hence many women often get confused. The best way to clarify is to consult a medical practitioner.

  • Discharge

Several women experience a white, milky discharge from her vagina, which is associated with the thickening of the vaginal walls as a result of conception and is caused by the growth of cells. This harmless discharge can continue throughout pregnancy and doesn't require treatment. However, the point to be noted is that women must consult their doctor in case of a bad smell, burning or itching sensation, as the possible cause could be a yeast or bacterial infection.

  • Breast Changes

The hormone levels of a pregnant woman change as soon as the conception occurs leading the breasts to become swollen, sore and tingly within seven to fifteen days. Additionally, the breasts may also feel heavier or fuller and soft to touch. Areola, the area around the nipple, may darken.

Such changes in the breasts could be due to other reasons as well but the point to be observed is that in case of pregnancy, women take around 2-3 weeks to get used to the new levels of hormones and subsequently normalizing the breast pain.

  • Frequent urination

Most women experience this symptom in their sixth or eighth week after they have successfully conceived. However, urinary tract infection is known to be a culprit for a frequent visitor to the washroom, some other possible causes could be diabetes and overuse of diuretics. But in case of pregnancy, the likely cause is the change in hormonal levels.

  • Constipation

Higher levels of a hormone called Progesterone leads to slow passage of food through the intestines and is known to make a pregnant woman constipated. It is suggested that a pregnant woman should drink plenty of water, eat foods rich in fibre, and exercise regularly to ease the problem.

  • Mood Swings

Mood swings are again associated with hormonal changes in the body due to the rising amount of oestrogen and progesterone in your blood. These increased hormone levels can affect your mood, making you feel tearful or easily irritated in conception, and are especially common in the first trimester of pregnancy. Much of your moodiness, though, may simply be due to the fact that pregnancy is a time of tremendous change.

  • Headaches and back pain

Several pregnant women complain of frequent headaches, while others experience chronic back pain. Although stand-alone they might not be an indicator of pregnancy, but after confirming that one is pregnant, they could be expected.

  • Fainting and Dizziness

Many women complain of fainting and feeling dizzy. A combination of reasons including the dilation of blood vessels and lower blood sugar levels are known as possible causes.
