Colic in Babies – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Colic is a severe symptom of abdominal pain among babies, which they experience and cry uncontrollably as a result of that. This condition among babies is common and happens to about 1 in 5 babies. Causes of  Colic in Infants is mostly unknown; however, Gastroesophageal Reflux, Immature Digestive System, Intolerance or Allergies, Ingesting Gas while Feeding, Imbalance of Healthy Bacteria might be some of the reasons behind colic in babies.

General reasons due to which babies cry;

  • Hunger
  • Cold
  • Tiredness
  • Heat
  • Diaper needs to be changed

But if the infant cries even after being well fed cleaned and comfortable, it might be due to colic. This usually starts a few days after birth and can go on until the baby is 4 months old. Although babies cry a lot during this time, colic is not dangerous or harmful. Babies with colic gain weight naturally and grow normally as per experts.


Wind or indigestion could be reasons; however, proper causes behind baby experiencing colic are unknown. Speculated reasons might be.

  • Ingestion of air while nursing.
  • Their gut may be sensitive to some of the substances in breast or powder milk

The following symptoms will appear in an otherwise healthy and well-fed infant:

  • Intense crying
  • Changed posture, arched back, clenched fists, tightened abdominal muscles
  • Irregular Sleeping cycle
  • Intense crying while
  • Passing Wind during intense crying

Some babies go through mild or severe pain during colic depending on the intensity of the colic. If any of the above symptoms are experienced by infants, it might be due to colic.

Treatment Colic is normal among infants and is not harmful. Usually, medication is not given for colic. Helping the child Burp well after feeds and providing “Tummy time” during the day, when awake maybe helpful.

Colic does not have much treatment, but parents can calm their infant if experiencing colic. Comforting them and soothing them is most helpful. However, if the issue seems to go out of hand visiting the pediatric specialist is recommended.
