What are the reasons for getting Dermabrasion?

It provides a youthful appearance by removing damaged outer layers of skin. It can also help treat:

  • Age Spots
  • Acne Scars
  • Fine wrinkles
  • Precancerous skin patches
  • Scars from surgery or injury
  • Tattoos
  • Uneven skin tone

How should you prepare for Dermabrasion?

Before the treatment doctor asks for a physical examination, review medical history, and discuss your risks and expectations. Discuss with the doctor about any medications you are taking, including over the counter medicine and nutritional supplements.

The doctor will recommend you to avoid smoking for a few weeks before and after your treatment as it decreases blood flow to the skin and slows the healing process. Avoid going out in the sun while your skin is healing and use sunscreen daily once healed.

Your doctor may recommend using the following before dermabrasion:

  • Antiviral Medication:

Use it before and after dermabrasion treatment to prevent viral infections.

  • Oral antibiotic:

It will prevent a bacterial infection, which is especially important if you have acne.

  • Retinoid cream:

It is derived from vitamin A and helps to promote healing after scar removal.

What happens during Dermabrasion?

Anesthesia is given before the treatment and during the treatment doctor will move a device called a dermabrader across the skin for scar removal while an assistant will hold your skin taut. The dermabrader device is a small, motorized device with a rough surface. A circular dermabrader is used on the large patches of skin while on the small places a one with a small tip is used. After the procedure is complete, your doctor will cover the area with a moist dressing.

What happens after dermabrasion?

The doctor will give you complete instructions about how to change the dressings, how to cover the treated area and which product to use. You can continue with your normal routine life after two weeks. After the procedure, your skin is typically pink and swollen and may feel like it is burning or tingling. It will take about 3 months for your skin to heal fully and for the pink coloration to fade.

What is the cost of Dermabrasion?

The dermabrasion procedure cost varies as it depends on the type of anesthesia given, facilities or other related expenses. Price also depends on the kind of dermabrasion procedure performed and the geographic location of the office.

What are the risks of Dermabrasion?

  • You may notice tiny white bumps on the treated skin that usually disappear on their own or with the soap or an abrasive pad.
  • It might cause the pore to grow larger, but they shrink to normal size after swelling decreases.
  • It can lead to bacterial, fungal or viral infection.
