Pain Relief

Each woman, especially during labor, experiences and tolerates pain differently. For some women, focused breathing is all they need to get through labour and childbirth. For others, numbing of the pain is desired. Though we encourage women to practice breathing techniques to ease the process, some may require specific pain relief methods. We offer various pain relief methods such as epidural, analgesia and entonox.

There are a number of different medications a woman can take during labour and childbirth. It is important to learn about the different pain relief options available and then make an informed decision. We recommend that you discuss the options with your consultant Obstetrician well in advance so that when you are in labour, you understand the choices.

Remember, you are the only one who knows exactly how you feel, so decisions regarding the control of your labour pain must be made specifically by you. Moreover, do not worry about the safety of the medicine. All medications provided during childbirth are considered safe for both you and your baby.

Why doesn’t Cloudnine offer water births?

Cloudnine Obstetricians & Neonatologists have attended many water births indifferent countries such as Australia and UK. But the reason they don’t offer water births in India is for the following reasons:

  • 1. We don’t have dedicated “midwives” trained in water births, unlike in other countries.
  • 2. Doctors are generally sceptical about water births in India. Awareness among mothers in India is low.
  • 3. Current recommendations of many Obstetric colleges around the world including UK & Australia (where they are used occasionally) is that there still isn’t enough comprehensive data about its safety to be able to recommend. Read more: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1440-1754.2010.01781.x/abstract
  • 4. Water birth is team work and everyone needs to be trained in the process, not just the doctor.
  • 5. Portable water is a problem in India. Water needs to be sterile at all times; any slip ups and your infection rates could be higher.
  • 6. Anecdotal evidence points to higher rates of asphyxia and deaths in “low risk pregnancies” – with our high standards of quality and care, we cannot compromise on the aspect of safety.
  • 7. Last, but not the least, there are other modes of pain relief which are safer and more natural than water birth.

In case you have further questions, please feel free to discuss with your consultant Obstetrician.
