"Do you require a pain relief? It depends on individual mother. Few of them can tolerate this labor pain, but vast majority of them think this labor pain as the worst pain of their life and require some kind of pain relief. By pain relief we reduce the stress in the mother. So once the stress in the mother is reduced the stress in the baby also comes down. Also it is very beneficial when the pregnancy is documented with hyperextension or some heart problems. So the Labor Pain Relief is the non pharmacological method where we give some medicine and the non pharmacological method where we don’t require medicine. So first the Non pharmacological method we have the Lamaze and the Bradley Method. This is a breathing technique where the mother is encouraged to take few deep breaths when the contain is there. This is explained during the delivery process and it also encourage the husband to be there inside the labour room. So this is some kind of a psychological motivating. We have music. Certain soothing music is added to have psychological benefits. Certain methods like yoga and hot showers are also used. Next method is TENS or Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. Here we apply small electrodes to the pataitns lowrer back and small dose of electric current is given and we get 10 to 15% of pain relief. Coming to the Pharmacological method there is Entonox. Entonox is a mixture of oxygen and nitrous . Nitrous is nothing but Laughing gas. Here the mother administers the gas by herself and breathes in and out by herself. Next is injection of strong pain killers. Opioids is given by intramuscular or intravenous route. Sometimes there is chances of the drug crossing form the mother to the baby and the baby may delay in crying and it may require a few assistance by the baby doctor or if necessary they might give an antidote. Then coming to the most common method is the epidural or the combined spinal epidural is the most effective methods for pain relief"
