How can one reduce a baby’s risk of SIDS? | Dr. Vadije Praveen Rao
"To reduce the SIDS risk some rules have to be followed so particularly starting from the initiation of the pregnancy. Smoking of pregnant women is associated with sudden infant death of the baby who is later born and the mothers should not go to sleep with the baby. This is very important. The Sleep campaign is called the Back to Sleep campaign where the babies have to be kept on their backs for sleep and mothers can share the baby's room but should not share the baby's bed. So this is a significant way to prevent this problem second the baby should not be kept tummy in the tummy time position during sleep. So when they are active we can give this tummy time but when the baby is sleeping the baby should not be kept head down position because it might suffocate the baby's nose and cause problems the bed should be firm and there should not be any loose objects on the bed. So these are the very important rules to decrease the problem of SIDS"
Can VACCINATION cause Infant Death(SIDS) | Dr. Vadije Praveen Rao
"There are concerns about vaccination increasing the SIDS. But it is not true so. Particularly DTP these types of vaccines are associated with decreasing the infections and protecting the babies. But they are not associated with the SIDS. So there is no worry about taking baby vaccines and in fact, they help decrease the infections. Particularly some of the infections they also present like SIDS. Some meningococcal infections gastric infections enteritis, and sepsis. These all will present like SIDS and that's why taking vaccination is very essential to decrease certain unexplained deaths of the infants also"
Tummy Time for Babies SAFETY? | SIDS Risk | Dr.Vadije Praveen Rao
"This tummy time is very important for the baby for the development. So this helps in better stomach and bowel movements and better muscle tone development but it should be after 4 weeks of the baby's age and during tummy time the baby should be supervised by the adults. The baby should not be left unattended while giving the tummy time. That is very important and the bedding should be firm. It should not be soft once again there should not be any loose objects on the bed of the tummy time and the baby should not be kept on the tummy time position during the sleep because it is associated with the SIDS. So the rule is very clear tummy time is beneficial provided you are supervising the baby. No tummy time when the baby is sleeping"
Does Breastfeeding reduce SIDS? | Dr. Vadije Praveen Rao
"Breastfeeding is an important preventive step for the SIDS. Breastfeeding for the first 6 months has been shown to decrease the incidence of SIDS and along with breastfeeding, certain practices also help in decreasing the SIDS. For example, swaddling should not be done when the baby is in the prone position which means head down position. If the swaddling is done in the prone when the baby turns to one side the baby's nose will be blocked. So this is one of the important steps to decrease SIDS and some of the few practices like pacifier use in babies have been shown to decrease SIDS. But the pacifier or dummy nipple should be introduced only once the baby is at least 1 month and breastfeeding well. So this will help in the self-control of the baby and it has been shown to decrease SIDS rates. But infection control of the pacifier should be taken care but the concerns with the pacifier are contamination so it should be kept clean"
How to swaddle a baby with a wrap? | Dr. Vadije Praveen Rao
"Swaddling is done for most of the babies. Even in the hospital, it is shown to be beneficial for the baby's temperature maintenance self-regulation the pain control. Swaddling can be done at home provided the baby is in the supine position that is face up position. If the baby is in the swaddling position in the head down position then it will be problematic or in the side position also because with the swaddling the baby can't turn from the side position to the face of position. So that will cause the problem with suffocation which is one of the important reasons swaddling should not be done in the prone position that is head down position then some of the factors regarding the temperature are also very important. If the baby is bundled a lot with a lot of cloths then the chances of overheating and even the overheating of the baby is associated with the SIDS. Some people use the light on the baby to maintain the temperature which is also not advisable because the temperature if it goes up is associated with SIDS"
What is the Danger Period for SIDS? | Dr. Vadije Praveen Rao
"The danger period for SIDS is 2 to 4 months. When the baby's brain is developing at a rapid phase. The problem of SIDS comes because of the immaturity of the baby's brain when the baby gets the oxygen the baby's brain should respond in a way so that the baby can breathe well. But because of the immaturity they stop breathing. That is the main problem and one of the important reasons for the SIDS. So that's why after 4 months the cases of SIDS are reported less. The risk of SIDS drastically decreases after the 4 months age but still, it can happen up to 1 year"
