Best Physiotherapy Treatment for new and expecting moms

At Cloudnine, having delivered over 1.25 lakh babies, we understand what all a mother’s body goes through during those crucial nine months and soon after. To make the mother’s journey more manageable, the Department of Physiotherapy at Cloudnine provides a host of physiotherapy services and treatments to help mothers both during pregnancy and post-delivery.

Apart from enhancing a mom’s body’s ability to have a smoother pregnancy and birth, our expert physiotherapists work with expectant and new mothers to provide personalised treatments depending on their needs.

Physiotherapy treatments for mothers at Cloudnine generally depend on the trimester they are in. In the first trimester, Cloudnine physiotherapists will focus on correcting your posture and guide you with techniques for safe lifting and mobility and treating any musculoskeletal problems. In the second trimester, the focus of the treatment is primarily on stretching to improve the flexibility of the lower limbs and pelvis. In the third trimester, our Physiotherapist will assist you towards labour coping strategies such as relaxation techniques, breathing exercises, positioning to facilitate labour and techniques to use in the pushing stage.

Some common pregnancy issues which Cloudnine’s Physiotherapy treatments can help mothers deal with are:

  • Upper back pain
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Sciatica (pain that radiates from the lower back through the hips and buttocks to the leg)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome (a condition that causes numbness, tingling, or weakness in your hand)
  • Pelvic girdle pain (pain in the front and back of the pelvis)
  • Bladder issues or urinary incontinence
  • Organ prolapse (a condition when pelvic organs such as the bladder start to droop or descend into the vagina)
  • Diastasis Recti (Commonly referred to as “Mummy Tummy” is a condition that causes the abdominal muscle to separate during pregnancy and labour).
  • Dyspareunia (a condition when you have pain during intercourse)

Cloudnine’s proven physiotherapy techniques have helped mothers lower the rate of prolonged second-stage labour, and reduced pregnancy-related low back pain and pelvic pain.

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy involves the science of movement and includes a wide range of exercises and massages to promote healing and holistic fitness.

Is physiotherapy safe during pregnancy?

Yes, physiotherapy is completely safe during pregnancy. When done under the supervision of a trained physiotherapist, it can help with pain management and relaxation during pregnancy.

What is the importance of physiotherapy during pregnancy?

Physiotherapy during pregnancy helps in dealing with the pain resulting from an increase in the hormone - relaxin. It also helps in maintaining the strength of muscles.

Which antenatal issues can physiotherapy help with?

Physiotherapy can help in dealing with pregnancy issues like upper back pain, neck and shoulder pain, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, pelvic girdle pain and bladder issues among others.

How can a physiotherapist help during pregnancy?

A physiotherapist will evaluate your physical health and identify any musculoskeletal or neuromuscular problems that could be aggravated during your pregnancy. Your physiotherapist will then recommend solutions accordingly. Post-evaluation, she will recommend exercises and massages. She will also teach you how to recognise and deal with tension and relaxation techniques to handle labour better.

What are the benefits of physiotherapy during pregnancy?

Physiotherapy has both long and short-term benefits for pregnant women. It helps you to prepare for labour and delivery. In addition, it helps in relieving some of the common antenatal ailments.

How soon can I start physiotherapy after having a baby?

If you have had an uncomplicated pregnancy, you can start as soon as you feel ready for it.

When can I start physiotherapy after having a c-section?

If you have had a C-Section, it is better to wait for 6 weeks post-delivery. Before starting, we advise you to consult your obstetrician.

Who should not exercise during pregnancy?

A pregnant woman suffering from the following conditions should avoid exercise -severe anaemia, restrictive lung disease, incompetent cervix, hemodynamically significant heart disease, multiple gestations at risk for premature labour, persistent second or third trimester bleeding, placenta previa after 26 weeks of gestation, premature labour during the current pregnancy, ruptured membranes, pre-eclampsia and so on.

How do I establish healthy habits?

Exercising is one of the best ways to stay fit, strengthen muscles, take care of your body during pregnancy and recover after childbirth. Cloudnine’s Department of Physiotherapy conducts regular classes for expecting and new mothers where you can learn the best exercises suited to your body type.

You can also establish good bowel habits by eating plenty of high-fibre foods, such as whole grains, fruit and vegetables. In addition, good bladder habits by drinking plenty of water and only urinating when the bladder feels full help too.
