Twinkle Twinkle Little Star… How Much Sleep is Right for My Star?

December 3, 2020

Every child is different, so their sleeping patterns also differ. There are children who sleep for long hours and there are those who sleep for a short while. Some doze off early at night and some keep awake till late hours. Sleep patterns undergo vast changes as children grow.

Sleep Patterns for different age-groups:

Newborn sleep: Newborns sleep for longer hours around 16 hours. Babies in this age group do not show a fixed sleep design. A toddler’s sleep pattern may last from a few minutes to unlimited hours at a time. Infants often wake up to refill their little belly.

3 to 6 months old:

As your baby grows, sleep hours may extend as they’ll need fewer night feeds. Some babies will sleep for eight hours or longer at night, but not all. By four months, children’ may sleep twice at night as they sleep during the day.

6 to 12 months old:

Babies in this age group will sleep for up to 12 hours at night. No night feeds can induce undisturbed and long sleep. Teething discomfort or hunger may wake some babies during the night. But none of these sleep patterns develops if you don’t practice a pattern. You need to encourage your baby to sleep at times and develop a routine.

12 months old:

After their first birthday, babies tend to sleep around 12 to 15 hours a day.

Two years old:

Most of the kids in this age group sleep 11 to 12 hours at night and 1 to 2 naps during the day.

Your baby is sleep-deprived of soothing sleep if:

  • your baby dozes off every time he is travelling in a vehicle.
  • your baby has to be woken up forcibly every day.
  • your baby is irritable and weary throughout the day.
  • your baby is off to sleep much early on some nights.

If your child is showing the above-mentioned signs, it is a wake-up call for you. ‘Yes,’ your baby is sleep-deprived. This calls for a healthy sleep design for your baby.

Soothing Sleep Schedule:

Teach your child that night time and day time is different:  During the day, play games with him, let all daily day to day noises unfold before him, open curtains and indulge him in activities performed during the day. Your baby should comprehend that night is different from day. Keep the lights dull; lower your voice, dress up him in night clothes. Very soon your baby will be able to demarcate between day and night.

Where should your baby sleep? During initial months you or your partner’s cosiness will provide comfort and sound sleep to your baby.  As the months' progress try to put your baby down before he actually falls asleep. Make sure that you place your baby in a snug place while he is sleeping so that he relaxes well.
