The maternity mosaic in India is sullied by a maternal mortality rate of 174 per 1,00,000 live births. Every hour, 5 women die in India due to pregnancy-related causes, with most succumbing to post-partum haemorrhage. The government has been instrumental in launching a quiver of initiatives to alleviate maternal and infant mortality and morbidity. The launch of the National Rural Health Mission in 2005 paved the way to fortified health infrastructure in the country. Although the maternal mortality rate has reduced over the last decade, India still contributes to 15% of maternal deaths worldwide. It is thought that up to 80% of these are preventable.
The genesis of Cloudnine in 2007 was deep-seated in an ethos underpinned by four key tenets: safe pregnancy, safe birthing, safe breastfeeding and safe infant care. Today, on National Safe Motherhood Day, we revisit this four-poster centrepiece that serves as a shining medallion in our service philosophy.
Cloudnine is recognised as a haven for high-risk and multiple pregnancies. With a team of veteran doctors, specialised nurses and seasoned specialists, every pregnancy experience is tailored uniquely and thoughtfully. Our signature maternity experience is composed of a medley of baby-ready programmes pointed at easing the pregnancy experience; from Lamaze and prenatal workshops to lactation and prenatal fitness sessions. On Cloudnine, there is a focused spotlight on fetal medicine, which seeks to monitor high-risk pregnancies by focusing on the special needs of the baby and performing interventions, if needed, whilst in the womb. This unit boasts a cutting-edge 4D real-time ultrasound imaging system.
With over 1,000 miracles welcomed every month, our gold-standard birthing infrastructure features in the crème de la crème of the Indian maternity landscape. Our state-of-the-art, infection-controlled operation theatres are equipped with the latest technologies, and are geared to handle a host of complications.
Cloudnine has always shone a light on the value of breastfeeding. For the past decade, every centre has been armed with a panel of lactation specialists to envelope new mothers in guidance, comfort and confidence. In 2016, we decided to extend our lactation footprint to government hospitals, as an outreach programme to indigent new mothers. As part of this campaign, Cloudnine partnered with fifteen Primary Health Centres across five cities. The campaign illuminated best practices and bolstered new mothers to talk about their concerns. The effort saw about 50 to 60 percent of new mothers registered with government hospitals, opting to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months.
Safe Infant Care
The infant mortality rate in India is a sombre emblem of a beleaguered neonatal landscape. Key demographic indicators presented by UNICEF have noted 53 deaths per 1,000 live births in India, while the corresponding rates for the United Kingdom, United States and Sri Lanka stand at 5, 7 and 10 per 1,000 respectively. It was to address this disparity that Cloudnine’s paediatric wing was established; to provide superlative care for infants and children. With one of the most advanced intensive care ecosystems in the country, our units host avant-garde technologies to cradle children to wellness. Our neonatal intensive care units allow us to welcome babies as premature as 24 gestational weeks.
Over the next few years, we endeavour to take Cloudnine’s best practices far and wide, and touch as many families as possible. This National Safe Motherhood Day, we doff our hats to safe motherhood and invite you to celebrate this day with us all year round.
