Cloudnine has always shone a light on the value of breastfeeding. For the past decade, every centre has been armed with a panel of lactation specialists to envelope new mothers in guidance, comfort and confidence. In 2016, we decided to extend our lactation footprint to government hospitals, as an outreach programme to indigent new mothers. As part of this campaign, Cloudnine partnered with fifteen Primary Health Centres across five cities. The campaign illuminated best practices and bolstered new mothers to talk about their concerns. The effort saw about 50 to 60 per cent of new mothers registered with government hospitals, opting to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months.
The infant mortality rate in India is a sombre emblem of a beleaguered neonatal landscape. Key demographic indicators presented by UNICEF have noted 53 deaths per 1,000 live births in India, while the corresponding rates for the United Kingdom, United States and Sri Lanka stand at 5, 7 and 10 per 1,000 respectively.
