Dengue fever during pregnancy

Dengue is an illness caused by a virus transmitted to people by certain mosquitoes. Although Dengue fever is short-lived, it might be fatal, it is quite dangerous for pregnant women.

The dangers include transmitting the virus to the baby during pregnancy or during childbirth. Such a case might result in a stillborn child or a weak child with low birth weight and even premature childbirth.

Children born under the influence of dengue fever are easily susceptible to very harmful diseases.

Symptoms of dengue fever include:

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Severe pain behind the eyes
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Rash
  • Mild bleeding (mostly from the gums)

Dengue hemorrhage might affect lives if not treated on time. Such people might suffer from;

  • Abdominal pain
  • difficulty in breathing

In case of detecting signs of Dengue Fever

If a person has dengue fever, she might understand it by the symptoms mentioned. In such cases, she should contact her doctor immediately and start treatment for that.

How dengue fever is treated

Dengue fever cannot be handled by medicines. However, the doctor might suggest simple methods to treat it, like;

  • Lots of rest
  • Drinking plenty of water to avoid dehydration
  • Taking acetaminophen to relieve fever and pain. (Do not take NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aspirin)
  • If issues get worse within the first 24 hours or even after, rushing the patient to the hospital is of utmost need

It is crucial that we avoid getting bitten by a mosquito carrying dengue fever, especially during pregnancy.

Tips to protect oneself against dengue fever:

  • Usage of insect repellent
  • Wearing loose cotton clothing which covers the arms and legs
  • Avoid staying in damp areas
