Laser hair removal is a procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light (laser) to remove hair from the body. It is one of the most widely done cosmetic procedures and its popularity is increasing due to its effectiveness. People who are not content with waxing, tweezing, or shaving, opt for laser hair removal.

Why is it done?

Laser hair removal is simply done to remove unwanted hair in any part of the body (except eyelids and surrounding area). It is commonly done in legs, armpits, upper lip, chin, etc. The laser beam is projected on the hair-follicle which is damaged by the beam. Hence, hair growth is stopped in the desired area. The success of a laser removal depends on the color of the skin and the hair. The higher the contrast between them, higher is the success of laser removal, and vice-versa. Hence, laser removal is most effective when the hair is of dark color and the skin is light. It is not as effective in blond or white hair.

Benefits of laser hair removal:

Some of the most common benefits of laser hair removal are:

  • One of the most important advantages of laser hair removal is that its effect is permanent. Unlike other methods of hair removal like shaving, waxing, etc., laser hair removal has a permanent effect.
  • Laser hair removal is a very precise method of hair removal. Only the hair in the desired area is removed without damaging the nearby skin, hence it is a very precise method of hair removal.
  • Laser hair removal is a very quick process. The procedure takes just a few minutes for smaller areas while larger areas take less than an hour.
  • Despite its complicated name, the process is quite simple and effective, and the risks are quite low.

Risks:

There are some minor risks associated with laser hair removal like:

  • Skin irritation is quite common after a laser hair removal session. However, the effects are quite temporary and mild, characterized by redness in the skin, itchiness, etc.
  • In some cases, laser hair removal may alter the pigment of the surrounding skin. However, this too is temporary and the normal skin color is restored in some amount of time.

These side-effects are not common to every person. Some may experience no side-effects at all while in some other people, the effects may be more pronounced. This also depends on various factors like the contrast of the hair and the skin, post-treatment care, etc.

Visit an aesthetic clinic near you to know more about laser hair removal.

The specialist will first review your medical history, discuss risks and expected results with you before proceeding with the removal. The process requires anywhere between two to six sessions and following the procedure, the hair falls out gradually and permanently over a period of a few weeks.
